Worried about someones drinking?

How much is it safe to drink?

The recommended limit for alcohol for ADULTS is

  • 2- 3 units per day for women (2 bottles of alcopops or a double shot)

  • 3 - 4 units for men (1 pint of Stella)

But these guidelines are for ADULTS - the safe limit will be much less than this for under 18s, depending on your size, and whether you're male or female.

If you're worried about your drinking, try the following:

1.  Work out how much you're drinking

Keep a Drink Diary for a couple of weeks, and write down what you drink each day.  You can work out how many units you're drinking by using the calculator here.

Try to keep a record of the times you're most likely to drink - with friends, at the weekend, when you're feeling down or bored.  These are the times when you need to watch your drinking - take up a new activity at the weekend, or call someone for a chat when you're feeling low.

2.  Get some advice

If you're drinking over the recommended level, or you're finding your drinking is affecting your relationships, your work, or your health, then get some free confidential advice.  Call Frank 24/7 on 0800 77 66 00, or call your local Young People's Service (KCA) on 01227 456744

3.  Don't go it alone

KCA offer free and confidential help if you're under 18.  You can call them for a chat, or arrange to meet a worker` somewhere private.  You can discuss your drinking with them, and if you want, they can help you to drink more safely or cut down.  But no one will force you - it's just a chance to find out what help is available.  Call 01227 456 744, or email yps@kca.org.uk
