NEW Question (posted February 2012)
where can i go to have my implant taken out?
Answer
Most community contraception clinics are able to arrange an appointment to remove implants, however they would probably need to talk to you first to arrange a suitable time with a nurse or Doctor who can do this procedure. It would be unlikely this could be done if you just "walk in". Some GP surgeries also have staff trained to do this, but not all. The best thing to do is ring a service first and then you can make the arrangements.
NEW Question (posted February 2012)
I’ve just started having sex with my boyfriend and I want to know the best for of contraception. Neither of us have had sex with anyone else so I’m not worried about STD's and i want to use something other than condoms. I now a bit about the pill, but i worry about the side effects, so i was wondering if there was any other contraception that effective with little side effects.
Answer
You need to go and talk all of this through with a nurse or doctor that specialises in this subject, so that they can answer you questions and together you can decide what is the best method for you. This will depend on what you find acceptable and if you have any medical conditions that may affect this choice. Go to a young persons or contraception clinic or your GP. Contraception is free and the service is confidential.
NEW Question (posted February 2012)
Is there a difference between a GUM clinic and a Young persons clinic? because i think i have Coronal Papillae, but they are not in rows and they are on my foreskin, in patches, some bigger than others. I have not been in any sexual activity. And i am not sure what to say when i go in for an appointment
Answer
Yes there is a difference between the two types of clinics. A young persons clinic will generally deal with contraception, pregnancy advice and Chlamydia screening. Some will do screening for infection but only if it is purely for a check up and the person has NO signs, symptoms, spots, discharges etc. These clinics are for under 25's.
A GUM clinic will test, diagnose and treat issues to do with sexually transmitted infections or problems with that area of the body. It sounds like this is the clinic you need to go to. They are both free, confidential and many are "walk in" clinics.
NEW Question (posted February 2012)
i have weird white spot like shapes on my foreskin. it doesnt hurt but it looks weird and is freaking me out
Answer
These sound like normal white spots called Coronal Papillae and most young men have them. They are not harmful and seem to become less noticeable as you get older. However if you are worried please go along to a Genito Urinary Medicine clinic to get it checked out. You can find out your nearest clinic by looking under the clinics section on this website.
NEW Question (posted February 2012)
Where can i go to get an IUD fitted as a long term contraceptive? What are the risks and benifits of this type of contraception? Can it be removed whenever or is their a certain time it has to be in for??
Answer
Lots of questions and most of them will be best answered if you go to see a nurse or doctor who specialises in this so that you can discuss it fully. Some doctors surgeries fit these but not all, you would need to check. However, all Contraception (Family Planning) services provide this type of contraception, but not at all clinics. The first thing to do is to go along to your nearest one and talk to a nurse. They will then go through all the questions you have and make sure you understand all about it, what the different types are and how long they can stay in for (this depends on the type of IUD you have and your age when you have it fitted. They can all be removed easily before that time if you decide you don't want to use that method any longer.
If you want to go ahead and have one put in, then they will sort out a suitable appointment for you. Occasionally for the procedure to be done you may need to go to another clinic site in the local area, but not always
NEW Question (posted February 2012)
am i a virgin.?
Answer
A virgin is a person who has not had penetrative sexual intercourse.
NEW Question (posted February 2012)
There's a girl in my year that keeps stroking my leg and i think she's attracted to me but i'm into boys. what do i do?
Answer
If you like her and want to keep her as a friend and not cause her upset, take this gently and keep your chats informal and light hearted. Perhaps steer the conversation to people/boys you like and find attractive such as music bands, actors, sportsmen, people on the telly etc. to let her know the type of boy you would go for. However, at the end of the day, if the touching is upsetting you, then you need to have a kind word in private and say that you would rather she didn't do this as it makes you feel uncomfortable, but like her company as a friend.
NEW Question (posted February 2012)
I've just recently found out I'm pregnant with my new partner but slightly worried due to my ex partner ringing with aggressive things. He keeps telling me that I have a letter at his house saying that my previous doctor is asking me for a Chlamlydia test urgently. Is your doctor aloud to do this? Because I went for a test for Chlamlydia & Gonhorrea which were all negative a year ago. I'm stuck with what to do! Thanks.
Answer
No Doctor would breach confidentiality by giving your details to somone else to pass on. Was the letter addressed to you, but opened by your ex partner perhaps? What they might of suggested to your ex partner was that if he was found to have an infection, he should contact anyone whom he had had sexual contact with to suggest they go and have a test. If you have not had sex with him since you were tested, then it is unlikely that you have picked up an infection from him, but if you have had sex with someone else without using condoms (which you have as you are pregnant), then there is no harm done by going for a check up. Make sure you tell the staff you are pregnant so that if you need any treatment they can give you the right medicine.
NEW Question (posted February 2012)
If I think I've got an vaginal infection but not an STD, who can I go to to let it check? Can I go to a Young people clinic?
Answer
The best place to get this checked out is at a Genito Urinary Medicine clinic as they are the experts at dealing with problems in that area of the body. You can find out where your nearest one is by looking under the clinics section of this website.
NEW Question (posted February 2012)
do u answer questions about irregular periods?
Answer
This sounds more like a general health query rather than a Sexual Health one, so I would recommend you talk to a nurse or doctor at your GP surgery.
NEW Question (posted February 2012)
I slept with my ex new year and the other day and now he told me he got chlaymdia? He getting treatment for it Monday. I've only slept with him in the last 9months and I was tested in dec and I was all fine. I have done other test and waiting on results but is there any chance I could have the treatment just in case? Or do I just wait?!
Answer
If you have had sexual contact with someone who has the Chlamydia infection then you should be tested AND treated. Please go to one of your local sexual health clinics or your GP.
NEW Question (posted January 2012)
Is it right that my penis sometimes leaks blood
Answer
It is important you go and see your Doctor or someone at a Genito Urinary Medicine clinic to get this checked out. You can find out where your nearest clinic is by looking under the clinics section on this website.
NEW Question (posted January 2012)
I want to go on the pill but it is very difficult to get an appointment after 5.30pm with a female doctor or nurse at my local doctors surgery, is there anyway else i can go to discuss going on the pill with a female nurse or doctor?
Answer
There are several contraceptive clinics that will be open after 5.30 in the area you live in or in nearby towns. If you are under 25 you can go to any clinic. If you are over 25 then you need to access a Contraception clinic not a "young persons" clinic. Some have appointments but many are "Walk In and Wait" clinics. They are free and confidential and you do not have to tell your GP you are going. These clinics will advise on all types of contraception including the pill. Look under the "Clinics" section on this website.
NEW Question (posted January 2012)
Where can i get a free full sexual health check up from HIV to clamidia?
Answer
You can get a full check up for all infections and a screen for HIV from a Genito Urinary Medicine clinic. All of this is free and confidential. You can find out where your nearest clinic is by looking under the clinics/services section on this website.
NEW Question (posted January 2012)
Hi, I came off the contraceptive pill last year as me and my partner have decidied to have a baby but I have not had any period since then and I'm definetly not pregnant yet (blood and urine confirms) please can you give me any possible causes??
Answer
You don't say which pill it was and whether you had periods whilst taking it. How long have you been off the pill, as last year could mean only 2 weeks ago? If it is a few months and before you went on the pill your periods came regularly every month, then it may be time to go and see your doctor. If before you went on the pill your periods were few and far between, then this is obviously what is normal for you. However it may still be worth having a chat with your doctor and see if he/she suggests any investigations.
NEW Question (posted January 2012)
I have a red and flaky rash on my penis. Where can I get test and on what days?
Answer
You need to go to a Genito Urinary Medicine clinic. These are free and confidential. Look under the "Clinics/Services" section on this website for the nearest GUM clinic to you. The times should be on there and there will be a phone number to ring if you are not sure.
NEW Question (posted January 2012)
I am 17 and have a lump just on the inside of my vagina, its like a spot and if squeezed a white or sometimes green goo comes out, it doesn’t really smell but it keeps coming back. I asked my mum and she said she’s had one before, but I recently found out that my boyfriend had unprotected sex with someone else and didn’t tell me before having sex without a condom with me. Could it be an STI? It doesn’t seem similar to anything I have read about. Its not really painful just when its about to burst.
Answer
It probably is just an infected gland or blocked duct but I would certainly suggest you go along to as Genito Urinary Medicine clinic for a check up to make absolutely sure. Please look under the clinics section on this web site for your nearest service.
NEW Question (posted January 2012)
How many condoms can you get from a c card?
Answer
The amount of condoms issued each time someone presents their C Card at an access point will depend upon the young persons age. The C Card access and Registration points have guidance about how many they should give at each visit. The average is about 8 each time, but may be less if the person is quite young or more if they are aged 17/18.
NEW Question (posted January 2012)
When getting tested for Chlamydia does it matter if your on your period?
Answer
You can be tested, but it may be better to wait until the period blood flow is light or finished.
NEW Question (posted December 2011)
What details will they ask me if I go for a chlamida test as I'm only 15
Answer
They will need to have a name, date of birth and a method of contacting you with the result (this is most often done by a text or phone call to a mobile phone. As you are under 16, someone will need to talk to you about your safety to make sure you are not in danger of harm through an abusive sexual relationship. All of this part will be confidential unless the professional is worried that you are at risk of harm and although the test has your name on it, the laboratory does not share any of this information with GP's or any other health service, apart from the Chlamydia Screening office who contact you with the result.
NEW Question (posted December 2011)
My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex yesterday. We think that he might of ejaculated inside me, but we are unsure. I was going to go to my local family planning clinic to discuss it with them, but I came on my period this morning. Does this mean that there isn't a chance of me becoming pregnant now?
Answer
If this was when your period was due and it is a normal period for you then do not worry. If however this is a very light bleed and is too early for it to be a normal period, please go and get some advice. I don't want you to ignore this if it is bleeding after sex, as this could be a symptom of something else, not a period
NEW Question (posted December 2011)
My penis is unable to actually fit a condom and keep it on what should i do about my penis size? as that is what i think it is
Answer
I think you need to come to a Sexual Health clinic to talk to a professional in confidence so that they can go through using condoms with you. It is not uncommon that young men try to put condoms on before their penis is erect and then get worried that they won't stay on. Or are you saying they break or slip off too early? Condoms also are made in a variety of shapes and sizes so you may need to try some different ones to see if you can find one that is comfortable.
You do not say how old you are, but if you are, still a young man your body may not have finished developing yet so may be you are trying to do this before your body is ready.
NEW Question (posted December 2011)
How big is an average size penis?
Answer
People come in all shapes and sizes and no one can give you an accurate answer for this, as it is not something that will have had proper research done on it. The size will also vary depending on whether the penis is soft or erect and according to what stage in development a young man is when they go through puberty.
NEW Question (posted December 2011)
Is a 13 year old allowed to go to get a c card themselves?
Answer
The Kent C Card scheme is for 13 to 19 year olds and yes, you can go and register on your own. However, the person you see will need to talk to you to make sure you are safe and not at risk of abuse or coercion into having sex before you are ready. It is confidential as long as they do not have any concerns about your wellbeing.
NEW Question (posted December 2011)
How many condoms can you get from a c card?
Answer
The amount of condoms issued each time someone presents their C Card at an access point will depend upon the young persons age. The C Card access and Registration points have guidance about how many they should give at each visit. NEW Question (posted December 2011)
Is it normal for a female to have discharge in knickers? its not every day but every now and again. its mostly just after a period and just before
Answer
Once a woman reaches puberty the entrance to the womb makes a mucous. At some times in the month it is whitish or opaque and thick and at times when the woman becomes fertile it becomes clearer, thinner and more watery. So it makes sense that you are noticing the thicker discharge at the beginning and end of the month, but not in the middle when you would be most likely to be fertile. As long as it does not make you itch, have a fishy smell or be a funny colour then it is probably normal.
NEW Question (posted December 2011)
i dont like giving blow jobs (tried it once and gagged). what can i do as i really dont want to do it?
Answer
No one should be made to do any sexual act at all if they do not want to. If someone is putting pressure on you then that is wrong. There are many other things people can do to give each other pleasure other than oral sex. Be assertive and say you don't want to. Sex is not compulsory it is a choice.
NEW Question (posted December 2011)
what should i do about my penis as i am now 18 and i am experiencing problems i.e my penis isnt the size its meant to be at this time of my life what should i do?
Answer
I wonder what you are comparing yourself to and when. People come in all shapes and sizes, but the condom manufacturers tell us that while there is some difference in size of men's penis's when they are flaccid, when they are erect there is very little. However if you are concerned that there has been no development through your teenage years until now then it may be worth talking to your GP and they may be able to check your hormone levels such as Testosterone to make sure all are OK.
NEW Question (posted December 2011)
If a girl isn’t on her period, will she get pregnant?
Answer
There is always a risk that a girl could fall pregnant wherever she is in her menstrual cycle. It is unusual for someone to get pregnant while they are bleeding but not impossible. Most people fall pregnant in-between one period finishing and the next one starting. A girl only produces one (occasionally 2) eggs a month, but the sperm a man produces can live in a woman's body after sex for up to 7 days if conditions are right. It is always important to use contraception/condoms every time if a couple do not want to risk a pregnancy.
NEW Question (posted December 2011)
What is a condom?
Answer
A condom is the name for a form of barrier contraception. A male condom is made from thin latex rubber or silicone and put over an erect penis before sexual intercourse happens. The man's sperm that is released during sex is contained in the condom, so that a woman would not get pregnant and both people have some protection against Sexually Transmitted Infections. Female condoms are made from silicone and line the vagina so act as a barrier in the same way.
Male condoms are also called other names, such as a "Johnnie" or a "Rubber". There will be many other slang terms as well.
NEW Question (posted November 2011)
Can you get the after morning pill from for young people if you are under the age of 16?
Answer
Most pharmacies will supply the emergency contraception pill to under 16's if they are part of the scheme to give it free, but some will not. They are not allowed to sell it to someone under the age of 16. All young people’s clinics should help young people of this age and most GP's will as well.
NEW Question (posted November 2011)
Hello, I was wondering what I need to do to get a C Card?
Answer
The C Card scheme is for young people between the ages of 13 - 19. You need to go to a Registration point where you will be seen by a trained professional who will explain about the scheme, ensure you are safe and know how to use the condoms correctly. You can find out where your nearest registration point is by looking under the C Card section on this web site.
NEW Question (posted November 2011)
I had an abortion on the 26th July and I had the injection. Ive only had the injection once which ran out on the 18th on October, I have now had a period since the 1st October so it’s coming up nearly 2 months, should I see my gp? What shall I do? Its really started to get to me now.
Answer
What I think you are saying is that you have been bleeding continuously for 2 months. Yes, I would go and see either your GP or a doctor or nurse at a clinic. As your injection has run out, you are not covered for contraception, so will be at risk of becoming pregnant again if you are having sex. I hope you are using another method such as condoms.
NEW Question (posted November 2011)
My girlfriend and I had unprotected sex for like 1 minute, and then we stopped because we had no contraception... I did not ejaculate... she finished her last period on Friday 25th November and im scared that she may be pregnant.
Answer
There is always a possibility that a pregnancy could have occurred as some men produce fluid that contains sperm before they ejaculate. Your partner will need to do a pregnancy test if she misses her next period. I hope you went to see someone about emergency contraception afterwards.
NEW Question (posted November 2011)
If you have sex at the weekend and go for a test on the Monday, will Chlamydia show up on test or do you have to wait a few weeks for it to show?
Answer
It takes about 10 days for Chlamydia to show on a test after sex with an infected person. If the weekend was the only time you have had sex then wait another week, but you can have a test whenever and however often you want if you have had previous partners or sex before this time.
NEW Question (posted November 2011)
Hi I recently came off the pill Cerazette as my partner and i are trying for a baby. I am 23 and he is 29. We have both been proven fertile in the past in previous relationships but unfortunately it did not go full term. I have heard many horror stories on the internet from people who have not been able to conceive since coming off Cerazette. We are really hoping we fall pregnant fast. I take folic acid and zinc and he takes multivitamins. Is there anything else we can do and is it true the above pill can cause problems for you when you are trying to conceive? Thanks
Answer
There is absolutely no proper researched evidence saying that the contraceptive pill of any type may cause infertility. In fact actually the opposite may be true. After you have taken a pill for a while which puts your ovaries to sleep, when you stop taking it, some people have a surge of natural hormones for a while that makes them slightly more likely to conceive until things get back to normal. The Cerazette pill does not stay around in your body when you stop taking it and whatever your natural fertility is at your age will return. The main cause of infertility in women is untreated pelvic infections such as Chlamydia, which have led to blocked Fallopian tubes. Please stop worrying.
NEW Question (posted November 2011)
Im 16, I recently thought I was pregnant, me and my boyfriend were like 90% sure I was..
But I've just done a test, and now I feel so much disappointment and I am so upset.. Most people would be relieved, but I just burst into tears when I found out I am not pregnant. I don’t know why I want to be pregnant, it's not like I think it'll keep me and my boyfriend together, we have an amazing relationship and a baby will not change that.
I just want to know why I feel so much need for a baby, it is all I have ever wanted, and even more so now, thinking about not being able to have one brings me to tears... When most girls my age should be going out enjoying the freedom!
Help... I am so confused...
Answer
You obviously have some very mixed emotions. Your sensible head says this is not the best time to have a baby when you need to have some freedom, grow up into an adult and maybe finish school, college etc and do all the other exciting things that come with becoming a young woman. However, your romantic head thinks it would be lovely to have a little baby. The reality is though that babies are hard work, very expensive and a lifetime commitment. These stronger feelings are probably temporary and as a result of you, mentally preparing for something that then didn't happen. As you obviously want a family in the future, I'm sure that you will end up being a lovely mum when the timing is a bit better, you are very young still and have lots of years ahead to have babies, just because this time you aren’t pregnant doesn't mean you can't have babies ever. It is lovely that you have a good relationship with your boyfriend. Enjoy being together as a couple first before you have all the emotional and financial pressure of having a baby.
If you think you need some counselling about this, try your GP or if you are at school or college, may be they have a counsellor there.
NEW Question (posted November 2011)
Hello there, can I ask a question about SEX please because I have a boyfriend we hold hands and I feel peer pressured is that normal? Can you rub hands and make a baby?
Answer
Being close to a boyfriend or girlfriend is normal and holding hands and cuddling is a natural thing to do when you like each other. Of course, you must not be pressured to doing anything you are not comfortable with. Everyone is ready to have relationships, including sexual ones, at a different time in their life. You are not abnormal if you want to wait. You can only get pregnant if the sperm and egg meet inside the woman's body usually after penetrative sex has taken place. Certainly not by holding hands.
NEW Question (posted November 2011)
I think my vagina is too big
Answer
As your vagina is inside your body how do you know? Vaginal walls do expand when a woman is giving birth and can sometimes feel a little loose for a while afterwards, but these soon get their elasticity back. I'm wondering if you are worried about the external woman's genitals, which are actually called the Labia and also include the clitoris. Girls often think these look strange and each persons private parts may look different, but are all still normal. If you are still worried, go and talk to a nurse at one of the clinics.
NEW Question (posted November 2011)
Not long ago a boy wanted sex, but I didn’t want to because I didn’t feel protected, and I didn’t know him much. He tried to finger me in the park when it was dark and I told him to stop because he kept trying to and then he put me on the floor and touched me in that place but he didn’t finger me what should I do??
Answer
If anyone either tries to touch you sexually when you have asked them to stop or forces you to do something when you have not agreed to it, then they are committing a serious sexual offence (a crime). Please tell an adult that you trust so that this can be reported to the police.
NEW Question (posted November 2011)
I have noticed a hard blood vein in my foreskin with a small lump in the vein. I looked on the internet and saw it might be a blood clot that will clear up. Please help me, what should I do?
Answer
If I were you, I would go and get it checked out by either your GP or a nurse or doctor at the Genito urinary medicine clinic just to be sure.
NEW Question (posted November 2011)
Do volunteer youth workers have to give out condoms if they don’t want to in a privately run youth facility.
Answer
Being part of the C Card scheme is a matter for discussion between staff and their individual organisations. If it is policy within that organisation that all the workers are trained to issue condoms, then individuals must address their concerns to the policy makers. The C Card scheme providers will only sign up workers who agree to the conditions, attend the training and meet all the criteria
NEW Question (posted November 2011)
About 2 weeks ago me and my gf had sex, we used protection and since then she keeps being sick having pains and is having signs of pregnancy is this possible for it to happen ? Thanks....
Answer
No contraception is 100% effective and although it is unlikely and may just be worry, it is important that your girlfriend gets her symptoms checked out. As you are both young it is very important that you talk to an adult you trust about this so that they can arrange for you to get the right advice and help to keep you safe. This could be a parent, a teacher or a nurse or doctor. Remember sexual activity is not legal until you are 16 so please think very carefully about what you are both doing, as dealing with a possible pregnancy or infection when you are still young is very difficult.
NEW Question (posted October 2011)
How old do you have to be to get a C Card?
Answer
The C Card scheme is for young people aged between 13 and 19
NEW Question (posted October 2011)
Im 11 weeks pregnant am I still able to get an abortion?.
Answer
If you meet the legal criteria for having a termination of pregnancy then yes you can still be referred for a termination. Terminations of pregnancy can be carried out up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, but it is very rare for them to be done as late in the pregnancy as this. Most are done under 14 weeks. If this is a path you need to go down please speak to a nurse at a clinic or your doctor as soon as possible.
NEW Question (posted October 2011)
I have genital herpes. I went to my doctor, and have been told that the liquid nitrogen needed to treat it is not available until late November. I am in a lot of discomfort and wonder if there is anything else I can take or do whilst I'm waiting.
Answer
I am wondering if there is some confusion here. Liquid Nitrogen is NOT a treatment for Genital Herpes. It is sometimes used to treat Genital Warts. As whatever you have is causing discomfort then do not wait, go along to a Genito Urinary Medicine clinic that are the experts in diagnosing and treating both of these infections and have all the medicines and treatments at the clinic for immediate treatment. You can find out where your nearest clinic is under the "Clinics" section and the service is free, confidential and your GP does not need to know you have been.
NEW Question (posted October 2011)
I've been with the same partner for over 2 years now; both lost our virginity to each other, and neither slept with anyone else. We’ve never really used contraceptive, maybe on the odd occasion but it wasn't till recently when I realised how long it had really been, and I had never fallen pregnant. Lucky as im only young if im honest, but is this something I should have worried about?
Answer
I suppose it all depends on how often you have sex. A woman only ovulates once a month and that egg is only able to be fertilised for 48 hours. So if you are having sex occasionally this time of conception could be being missed. Conception also relies on the mans sperm being of good quality and present in large numbers as well as the woman releasing eggs.
Unless you are wishing to become pregnant, it is unlikely that a doctor would start running tests at the moment. However, you could go and talk to your GP if you are concerned.
NEW Question (posted October 2011)
My depo injection finished last Tuesday and I haven’t been and got one since as I thought it wasn’t the right one for me as I had period for 3 weeks then a couple of days off now I have had a period for 4 weeks non-stop, is that my body starting to ovulate again? Or do I need to see my gp?
Answer
It sounds more like irregular bleeding due to the injection as the injection only ran out last Tuesday. You do not say how long you were using the injection, but it is not unusual to have irregular bleeding during the period of the first or second injection. Eventually, most people who use this method do not bleed.
NEW Question (posted October 2011)
Hi, is it true that Boots in Ramsgate can give you the emergency contraceptive pill free? If so please tell my how do I go about this do I just go in and ask or what, please reply ASAP-- im 18 and last night during intercourse our condom split, im really worried and need to take the pill asap, many thanks
Answer
A lot of chemists are part of the scheme to issue free emergency contraception to young women under 20. If you look on the section of the website that says "Emergencies”, you should see a list of who takes part in this scheme. It is always worth ringing first to check that the pharmacist who is trained is working. The other places that you can get this free are your GP surgery and the community contraception clinics. There is one at College Road Clinic, Margate, tonight 6pm to 8pm and one at Piermont Pharmacy, Broadstairs High Street, this afternoon 4pm - 6pm (Monday)
NEW Question (posted October 2011)
Can you have an abortion first time you go to a drop in clinic?
Answer
Drop in young peoples clinics DO NOT provide this service. Termination of Pregnancy procedures are done by specialist clinics or at hospitals. Drop in clinics are for advice on sexual health, contraception, Chlamydia screening, emergency contraception, pregnancy tests and referral and condom provision.
If someone is pregnant and does not wish to continue with the pregnancy, they must see a doctor or nurse to talk through the options available, discuss the reasons for needing a termination and have a medical assessment as two doctors need to agree that the woman meets the legal reasons that are required for this procedure to happen. We do not have abortion on demand in this country.
NEW Question (posted October 2011)
How do you register for a c card?
Answer
You need to find a C Card Registration point near you. You can look for this under the C Card section on this website. When you go along you will be seen by a trained person who will go through with you the information you need to know and what information we need to know. They will explain about the C Card system and if you are under 16, talk to you to make sure you are safe.
NEW Question (posted October 2011)
My partner has the herpes simplex virus. He says it's OK to have unprotected sex if there is no manifestation of lesions etc. Is this true?
Answer
Herpes Simplex is the virus that gives you cold sores, but you can also get this on the genitals. It is important not to have oral sex if you have a cold sore and not to have penetrative sex if you have sores or ulcers on the genitals.
The problem comes after they have all healed, as the virus can still be shed through the skin for a while afterwards. Even if you use condoms, there may be areas of the genitals that are affected by the virus that are not covered by the condom. I suggest you go to a GUM clinic to get some expert advice on how to manage this and you might find some more useful information on the Herpes Virus Association website.

Is anal sex painful?
Answer
Anal sex is a very risky activity as it is not what this area of the body is designed for. There is a risk of trauma to the area. Please come and talk to a nurse or doctor at one of the clinics if you want more information.

I've just lost my virginity and now feel saggy and itchy down below, is this normal?
Answer
If you didn't use a condom and your partner has had sex with other people before you, you need to get checked out for infection. Sometimes itchiness can be a sign of simple vaginal infections like Thrush but I would still advise going to see a nurse or a doctor. It is important to use a form of contraception, but condoms will are good as they will protect you from infection as well. You can get condoms free from young people's clinics and if you are young, it would be a good idea to come along and see a nurse so that you have all the information you need to be safe. You can find out about your nearest clinic on this website.
NEW Question (posted October 2011)
How do u have sex?
Answer
Sexual activity takes many forms from stroking, cuddling, kissing and touching to actual penetration. There isn't a right or wrong way to do these things and couples learn gradually what feels good and right for them when they are in a loving relationship. The important thing is not to rush things, make sure that this type of activity is what you want to do and use protection against getting an infection of pregnancy. You sound young, so remember that sexual activity is illegal until the age of 16, but many people wait until they are a lot older.
NEW Question (posted October 2011)
What happens if it hurts?
Answer
Your question is not very specific so it is difficult to reply to. Could you e-mail in again telling us what it is you are worried about hurting. Is it about having a method of contraception fitted like an Implant, or having a treatment for an infection, or having sex, or something else?

Can the C Card be totally anonymous, and not have to go into a shop and have the c card sent to my house?
Answer
You cannot register for a C Card by post or over the internet. This is a scheme for young people between the ages of 13 and 19. It is important that anyone wanting a C Card to access condoms because they need protection from pregnancy and infection, talks to a trained professional first. This is to make sure you are safe and to make sure the right information about using condoms and the scheme is given. The service is confidential and the people trained to provide it, have experience in working with young people and understand how they may be feeling.

my friend thinks she has thrush /: ....
Answer
If it is Thrush then there are treatments that can be bought over the counter at all chemists. However if she needs to make sure first, then your friend needs to go and see a nurse or a doctor either at her GP surgery, or at a Genito Urinary medicine clinic. This would be the best option in case it is another infection which needs a different treatment.
NEW Question (posted September 2011)
I'm currently in sixth form and 6 weeks pregnant - head of sixth form has said i have no choice but to leave? Do i have any rights or anything? I'm very early and accidents happen so do I have to leave straight away? I'm taking Science diploma and English lit - Thank you.
Answer
What a lot you're having to deal with, studying, early pregnancy and now the anxiety of what to do. It is a shame that your school does not sound very supportive and absolutely I cannot see any reason why you have to leave straight away as you are in the very early stages of your pregnancy. As you are above the age of compulsory education, the options and rules of the school may be different than what they would be if you were under 16. As this is a Sexual Health web site, I am not the expert in education matters so I think you need to talk to someone who is to know what all your options are. I have spoken to the Connexions service that support young people under 19 with these matters and if you ring your local service and explain the situation, they will put you in touch with a specialist advisor who can help you. The number you need is 01622 753360.
I do hope that your partner/family/friends are being supportive. If you want advice re the pregnancy, please talk to the young peoples clinic service or your GP and they can put you in touch with a midwife.
I really hope all goes well.

NEW Question (posted September 2011)
can you get the after morning pill for connxions ??
Answer
The Emergency Contraception Pill is only available via a health professional, such as a pharmacist, a nurse or a doctor as it is a prescription medicine. Non health professionals will not be able to supply it, so unless the Connexions service has a health clinic with a nurse, then no you cannot get it there.
NEW Question (posted September 2011)
If I was to go to a drop in clinic concerning contraception, would it be possible for them to issue me with contraception right there? eg. the injection?
Answer
Condoms you would be able to get straight away.
If you wanted a contraceptive pill then after a health assessment to make sure it was the right thing for you, you would be able to have it ready to start when the time was right.
The injection would only be given if it was the right time of the month, but you could discuss it and be advised when to come back Implants and IUCD'S (Coils) again they can only be fitted at certain times and usually you have the first consultation and then arrangements are made for when to come back to have the fitting. Only certain doctors and nurses are trained to fit these Not all clinics have patches, rings and all brands of pills in the clinics. Sometimes a different pill will be given and sometimes you may have to collect these from a chemist.
Not all clinics will fit and supply diaphragms, but you will be advised at the clinic

NEW Question (posted September 2011)
Hello, I am an 18-year-old guy and I was wondering if you could help me. I have had a great sex life with my girlfriend for the past year and a half and we are each other’s first sexual partners. Recently I have noticed white 'gunk' underneath my foreskin, which appears after sex. I know it can’t be an STI but I was wondering if it could be something like thrush or trapped cum causing an infection. I don’t want to see my doctor as its quite embarrassing but I was wondering if you could help. Thanks
Answer
It could be something as simple as thrush; it might be worth getting it checked out at our gum clinic if it does not settle down or worsens. Thrush is a common yeast infection that you can get for various reasons. It does not mean it is a sexually transmitted disease. If your girlfriend also has a similar discharge, it is a good idea to go to the clinic together to get treatment.
NEW Question (posted September 2011)
Do the drop in clinics do the contraception patch? As i would like to try it as I have not had much luck with other contraception.
Answer
The family planning clinic does not routinely offer the contraceptive patch. If you go to the family planning clinic and talk to the staff who works there, then they may be able to offer you a prescription to get one from a pharmacy.
Otherwise you could talk to your GP about having a contraceptive patch.
NEW Question (posted September 2011)
Hello, this question isn't really about sex but about something that effects my sex life. I suffer from really bad self esteem which always causes me to feel down and I never feel sexy which effects my sex life, how can I improve my self esteem?
Answer
I am wondering what has happened in the past for you to feel so badly about yourself, sometimes it does not need to be much, a comment that touched a nerve may be, something at school or within your family. If you feel this isn't something you can deal with yourself then maybe some form of counselling or therapy may help. You would need to see your GP to be referred for this or if you are at school, college, or university often they have counselling services for the students that you can self refer into.
Please see someone to ask for help if you feel this bad about yourself.
NEW Question (posted September 2011)
If I take two 21 days worth of the pill, how long will it take for me to come on my period?
Answer
Hopefully you mean one a day for 42 days, not all in one go! When you finish the second lot of pills you just stop for your break of 7 days as you would have after one strip. Then you will start to bleed (have a period) sometime during that week off. The bleed you have on your pill free week is not a period it is a withdrawal bleed from the pill hormones.
Generally while you continue to take the pills you won't bleed and when you stop you do. However some people have break through bleeding if they run packs together. If that happens it is OK to carry on with the pill, but some people would rather stop the pill for their week off at that point and have a proper bleed, then start again with a new pack.
NEW Question (posted September 2011)
I have a sort of flappy bit of skin near my g spot and it hurts a lot when I am penetrated in anyway, what could this be? Am I ripped or something? Or is it a sti???? Please can you tell me what it could be and what I need to do about it thanks
Answer
It is probably normal and maybe sex is painful because your partner is not making sure that you are ready for him to penetrate. Try telling him to be a bit less hurried and ensure you use lots of lubricant (a water based one if you are using condoms). I don't expect it is an infection but a simple vaginal infection like thrush can make you sore on the outside. To get some reassurance, go and see a nurse or a doctor at a Genito-urinary Medicine clinic to get a check up. You can find out where your nearest one is by looking under clinics on this website.
